Fiber Cement

James Hardie cement siding is a durable product that resists fire, moisture, rot and termites. Most fiber cement siding is made from a combination of water, sand, Portland cement and wood pulp or cellulose fibers. It typically costs less than brick, composite or hardboard siding. Although it’s more expensive than vinyl siding, fiber cement’s long lifespan and low maintenance makes it a great investment.

Vinyl

One of the most popular and least expensive options on the market, vinyl siding should be installed by a professional siding contractor for best results. Higher quality vinyl will resist fading, buckling and UV rays better than cheaper, lower-quality products. Panels can be textured or smooth and typically come in vertical or horizontal panels that are 8 inches wide and either look like three 3-inch or two 5-inch siding courses. It’s a long-lasting, low-maintenance choice that never needs painting – annual power washing is usually sufficient.

Wood

Wood siding is a classic choice that comes in different horizontal and vertical styles, such as board and batten, clapboards, shingles or shakes. Cost, availability and durability varies depending on the species chosen. A professional siding installer will be able to help you select wood siding that is accessible here in Kansas and withstands our extreme weather conditions. Splitting, cupping and rot are all concerns with wood siding, so the best option is to use the best grade that your budget allows. Pine, spruce, cedar, fir and redwood are all common choices.

If your wood siding isn’t pre-primed, be sure to prime and paint it as soon as possible for protection from mold and mildew. With proper maintenance, such as power washing, sealing and staining, you can expect your wood siding to last for years to come.

Engineered Wood

For customers who like the look of real wood and want a lower-maintenance and less expensive option, engineered wood siding from LP Smart Siding is a great choice. It’s made from wood chips that are coated with resin and compressed into boards. Each board is embossed with a wood-like texture that resembles cedar grain and then treated with a moisture-resistant coating. However, moisture can be a problem with improper installation and/or inferior products, so hiring an experienced siding installation company is key.

Engineered wood is about half the price of real wood siding and it’s usually easier and less expensive to install. Engineered wood boards weigh less than wood, and many brands come pre-primed or pre-finished. It’s a durable, environmentally friendly option that resists termites and typically includes a warranty anywhere from 30 to 100 years.
