How to Tell if Your Roof has Storm Damage

Not sure if your roof needs repairs? On a traditional asphalt roof, there are a few signs of storm damage to look for. First, if you see any areas where shingles are missing asphalt, that’s a sure sign of hail damage. Look for shingles with a smooth appearance where the material has been stripped away. They should be easy to spot from the ground, but an up-close inspection by a professional roofer is recommended, as some damage may not be as obvious.

Uneven shingles are another sign of hail damage on a roof. Shingles can be displaced when hail hits your roof, which causes small waves or bumps in the roof. In some cases, it may look like a bubble. If your roof has spots that are not flat and uniform with the rest of the roof, it may need repairs.

Bruising can also be a sign of hail damage. Bruising is when small dents form in roofing shingles. These are often quite small, so you may not be able to see them, but the damaged area of the shingle will feel softer. Over time, bruising leads to deterioration and further damage to the roof.

Cracked shingles are also common after larger hailstorms. The cracks are usually circular and look similar to what you’d see on a glass with a crack. Cracks can allow water to penetrate the interior layers of the shingle, leading to faster deterioration.

Dents and dings in metal areas of the roof, such as flashing or vents and even guttering, are signs of hail damage. And, if you see damage to metal components, there’s a good chance the shingles are also damaged.
